Gimme five ... adventurous honeymoons

Amanda Morison5 April 2012

A Honeymoon used to consist of two weeks at a beach resort - sun, sea and sex. Now newlyweds are demanding adventurous itineraries. The reason, says Sue Biggs, of Kuoni Travel, is the boom in international tourism.

"Twenty years ago, a honeymoon was often the first time a couple flew out of Europe. Now, clients have been to numerous long-haul destinations. We have to work extra-hard to make their honeymoon special." Julia Hall, of Hayes and Jarvis, agrees: "We have to offer something unique, such as hot-air ballooning over the Masai Mara or sailing around Bali." The Galapagos, Rajasthani palaces and trekking in Peru are current favourites. It all depends how much time you have.

Prices are for two.

JUNGLE AND THE DEEP

You will need 16 nights for this trip of a lifetime in Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, starting in Quito and the High Andes at the Hacienda Pinsaqui, then staying in an Amazonian jungle lodge and ending with eight nights in the Galapagos, full-board on the six-cabin Anando.

It costs from £5,990 with Worldwide Journeys and Expeditions (020 7386 4646, www. worldwidejourneys.co.uk).

WHITE WATER AND HORSES

With 12 nights to spare you can get the best of Argentina, including time in Buenos Aires, before hitting the Lanin National Park for full-board at the Estancia Huechahue, from which you can divide five days between riding, white-water rafting and cooling off in water holes followed by a trip 650 miles south to Patagonia. Call Exsus Travel (020 7292 5050, www.exsus.com), price from £5,890.

AIR, LAND AND SEA

On a 10-night honeymoon you can combine hot-air ballooning over the Masai Mara and a luxurious safari staying at Governor's Camp, with five days' diving in Zanzibar. Through Kuoni Travel (01306 747008, www.kuoni.co.uk), from £4,080.

ROMANCE OF RAJASTHAN

Nine nights are enough to try out the new, much lauded Amar Vilas hotel in Agra - with views of the Taj Mahal - then to stay in the rose-pink city of Jaipur in the Maharaja's former residence. Finish at the dream-like Lake Palace in Udaipur. With Cox and Kings (020 7873 5000, www.coxandkings.co.uk), from £4,490, including car with a driver/guide.

SUN AND SCENERY

A week in Florida can include a two-day tour of the Everglades, Miami and Florida Keys with airboat excursion, for an additional US$289 (£198) pp. Through Thomson Florida and West Coast USA (0870 5502046; www.thomson-holidays. com) from £1,550.
