A man has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a van exploded and damaged a nearby house.

The incident in Clayton West, near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, was heard by several people living across a wide area, according to reports on social media.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews were called to Ings Mill Avenue on Thursday afternoon.

A spokeswoman said: “Firefighters have dealt with a fire following an explosion inside a van.

“The fire has spread to a garage and a house has also been partially damaged.

“The fire is now out.”

She said a man suffered burns and has been taken to hospital by air ambulance.

Two fire crews remained at the scene on Thursday afternoon alongside a fire investigation officer, the spokeswoman said.

A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Police and emergency services were called at 1.39pm to reports that a vehicle had exploded and caught fire on Ings Mill Avenue in Clayton West.

“One man has been seriously injured and has been taken to Leeds General Infirmary.

“Inquiries are ongoing.”
