As the term implies,country houses are generally in rural areas but not exclusively. The definition applies to those houses that warrant more than immediate coverage afforded by a local office and newspapers. This definition would equally cover a particularly attractive period house in the town or, on the other hand, a modern house of individual design in a particular setting.
