Bande A Part

Alexander Walker10 April 2012

Jean-Luc Godard once said, 'All you need to make a film is a girl and a gun.'

Taking his own advice, he turned out one of his most easily accessible movies: the story of a trio of punks, played by Anna Karina, Claude Brasseur and Sami Frey, living out the fantasies of planning the perfect robbery.

Most of the story, though, sticks to the period between the planning of the raid and its execution, when Godard' s free-associative vein of wit manages to make room for a joyous nine-minute scamper through the Louvre, to beat the American tourist record of nine minutes, 45 seconds; a class discussion of a Shakespeare play; and a piece of virtuoso choreography paying tribute to the Hollywood musical.
