Tonbridge has a good range of schools and many of them are judged to be outstanding by Ofsted. Tonbridge School, for boys ages 13 to 18, is a top private boarding school, although around 40 per cent of its 800 pupils are day pupils; its school buildings at the northern end of the high street are a prominent feature of the town.

There are also a number of primary schools which are judged “outstanding”. They are: Slade in The Slade; St Margaret Clitherow RC in Trench Road; Woodlands Junior in Hunt Road; and Penshurst in the village of Penshurst.

There are also a number of private prep schools. Somerhill, a large Jacobean mansion, houses three schools: Somerhill Pre-Prep (co-ed ages three to six); Derwent Lodge (girls ages seven to 11) and Yardley Court (boys ages seven to 13). Hilden Oaks School and Nursery (co-ed ages three months to 11) and Hilden Grange (co-ed ages three to 13) are both in Dry Hill Park Road; Fosse Bank (co-ed ages three to 11) is at Mountains House in Hildenborough.
