Willian can 'really make a difference' for Arsenal after completing Chelsea switch, says Mikel Arteta

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has hailed Willian’s versatility as one of the key reasons behind the Brazilian’s arrival at the Emirates.

The 32-year-old has signed a three-year-deal with the Gunners, joining on a free transfer after leaving Chelsea when his contract expired earlier this month.

Eyebrows have been raised at the length of the deal offered to a player moving into the latter part of his career, particularly as Chelsea’s refusal to offer similar terms contributed towards his departure.

However, Arteta insists that Willian’s ability to play in several attacking positions will be key as he looks to rebuild his squad during his first summer in charge.

“I believe he’s a player that can really make a difference for us," Arteta told the club website. "We have been monitoring him for the past few months, we had a clear intention to strengthen in the attacking midfielder and the winger positions [and] he is a player that gives us a lot of versatility, he can play in three or four different positions.

“He has the experience of everything in the football world but to still have the ambition to come here and contribute to bring the club where it belongs. I have been really impressed with all the talks I have had with him and how much he wanted to come.”
