Liverpool eventually eased to a 3-1 victory over Newcastle United at Anfield after the Magpies went ahead with a shock early goal.

Jetro Willems scored a stunner to shock the Premier League leaders after just seven minutes, but Liverpool were level 21 minutes later thanks to a similarly superb Sadio Mane effort.

Mane put Jurgen Klopp's side 2-1 ahead five minutes before half-time thanks to a Roberto Firmino assist, and the Brazilian then teed up Mohamed Salah with a backheel for the Egyptian to round off the victory.

73mins: Oxlade-Chamberlain's day is over, the midfielder making way for Milner.

Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle | Salah 71'

Liverpool have had real trouble working their way through that massed Newcastle defence all game - but not this time.

A delightful one-two between Firmino and Salah puts the latter in on goal for the sort of chance he never misses.

Left foot, far corner, goal.

59mins: Alexander-Arnold finds Firmino in the box but the Brazilians header is saved by Dubravka.

Liverpool could really do with another to make this comfortable.

14 September 2019

55mins: Atsu does brilliantly to keep possession on the left and dig out a cross to the back stick where Liverpool have no defensive cover.

Emil Krafth is there for the visitors, but his attempt is high, wide and handsome.

49mins: A fantastic passing move sees Liverpool work the ball from end to end and Wijnaldum almost puts the finishing touch on it.

The Dutchman does brilliant to see himself up for a volley from a Robertson cross but it drops onto the roof of the net.

46mins: Newcastle get us back under way here.

Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle

The hosts take a one-goal lead into the break at Anfield but they've been made to work for it.

Newcastle put themselves on track to claim another big scalp on the road when Willems struck early and in brilliant fashion to give his team the lead.

However, Mane's double has turned this game on its head, and Liverpool look in the mood for more.

45mins: Three minutes to be added on...

Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle | Mane 39'

The Reds take the lead thanks to a combination of tenacious play and good fortune.

Firmino wins the ball in midfield before playing a slide-rule pass through for Mane, who looks like he might be beaten to it by Dubravka.

What actually transpires, however, is a 50-50 that Mane just about comes out on top of, leaving him with an empty net to tap into.

36mins: Origi can't continue so here comes Firmino from the bench.

A shame for the Belgian given he doesn't get many opportunities to start ahead of any of this front three.
