The lowdown: Romford
Romford is getting a new town centre and house prices are expected to receive a boost when Crossrail takes over the exisiting Shenfield to Liverpool Street line and extends it through central London from May 2019.

Most of Romford's state primary schools are judged to be “good” by Ofsted and four are judged to be “outstanding”. Chadwell Heath Academy is a local comprehensive that's judged "outstanding" while the Frances Bardsley Academy for Girls gets better than average GCSE results and is judged to be “good”. Romford is a major shopping town with several shopping centres radiating off the pedestrianised South Street. The Liberty shopping centre is the largest with a branch of Debenhams and a good selection of high street brands such as M&S, H&M, Topshop and Superdry.
Romford is close to the A12 London to Great Yarmouth road and junction 28 on the M25. Trains from Romford take under half an hour to Liverpool Street; and there are also stations in Harold Wood and Gidea Park (all in Zone 6; annual travelcard £2,344) and Chadwell Heath (in Zone 5; annual travelcard £2,188).
The Brewery on the site of the former Star Brewery has a number of chain restaurants including Pizza Express, Nando’s and Patisserie Valerie. The Brickhouse bar and restaurant is popular with the TOWIE crowd. There are nice gastro pubs in the villages, such as The Orange Tree in Havering-atte-Bower and the Alma Arms in Navestock.
Leisure and the arts
Romford has one of London’s few surviving greyhound stadiums on London Road and there is an ice rink on Rom Valley Way. There are two multiplex cinemas and The Brookside Theatre specialises in tribute bands. The MMA Clinic is a mixed martial arts club in the High Street. See our full list here.
Raphael Park on Main Road was originally designed by Sir Humphry Repton and has a large lake, a café, playground and an annual open air theatre festival. Cottons Park on London Road on the edge of the town centre has a skate board and BMX park. Havering Country Park has a rare avenue of giant Redwoods.
