The lowdown: Purley
Many of leafy Purley's streets, 13 miles from central London on the capital's southern edge, are on the hilly North Downs. The £1.5 billion development by Westfield/Hammerson of shops and homes in nearby Croydon, with work starting next year, is sure to boost Purley's popularity.
