Weybridge, formerly known as Waigebrugge in 675AD, Weybrigga in 1062 and Webruge in 1086, literally means Bridge over the river Wey.
Many prehistoric implements have been dredged from the Wey and the Thames, an on St. George’s Hill is a Bronze Age Camp. In 1537 Henry VIII built Oatlands Palace and until its demolition by Oliver Cromwell, it was residence of Elizabeth I, James I and Charles I. In 1790 the Duke of York bought the estate from the Duke of Newcastle and lived there until 1822.
