Battersea Dogs' Home
Originally known as the Temporary Home for Lost and Starving Dogs, the Dogs' Home was founded in 1860 by Mary Tealby, and moved to Battersea in 1871. There was early antagonism to a scheme that sought to save dogs rather than humans, but Charles Dickens helped change public opinion, and, in 1885, Queen Victoria became Patron of the Home.
Today, the Dog's Home reunites lost dogs with their owners, trains bad dogs to be good dogs, and finds good companions for abandoned ones.
Square Dance
Battersea Square is home to the Royal Academy of Dance. Founded in 1920, RAD has become a global organisation that promotes the knowledge of dance internationally. Every year over 250,000 students around the world are taught the Academy's classical ballet syllabus by Academy trained teachers.
